About Me

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I was born and raised in West Central Minnesota (Browns Valley). I'm married (Lisa), have 2 adult children (Katie & John), and a grandson (Mason). We moved to South Dakota in 2001. I have 2 labs, Sandy who is 13 years old and Mya, who is 2 years old. Everyone in my family hunts with a rifle and shotgun (except the dogs). I hunt with a bow & arrow. My wife hunted with a bow & arrow until she injured her shoulders at work. This spring she got a crossbow permit to allow her to hunt during archery season. I started hunting with a muzzle loader 2 years ago and I'm hooked. My wife and I started raising elk in 1995 (picture 23/100 of the big 6 X 6 bull is one we raised). We are out the elk business now, we sold our last elk in 2008. I worked in banking for about 25 years until 6-1-07 when I resigned as Market President at the bank in Rosholt and bought a local independent insurance agency. I am a dealer for Primos Double Bull Blinds and Sims Vibration Laboratory Products (Limb Saver).

John's Late Season Archery Elk Hunt

I drew a late season archery any elk license for Custer State Park this year. Custer State Park is 71,000 acres of varying terrain and is has about 570 elk. South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks issues 50 licenses for late season archery in a lottery drawing with preference points for each year that you have applied. This year there were 2,007 applications for the 50 licenses. The success rate on this hunt is low. The elk have been chased around during the early archery season and firearms season.… Continue

Lisa's 2008 Elk Hunt

My wife Lisa drew an any elk firearms license for Custer State Park this year. This is a once in a lifetime license for South Dakota residents only. They give out 35 licenses in a lottery drawing with preference points for each year that you have applied. In 2008 there were 14,750 applications for the 35 licenses. Custer State Park is 71,000 acres of varying terrain and is has about 570 elk. We scouted for elk for 5 days in August and the day before the season opened. Lisa got her bull elk at 7:… Continue

2008 South Dakota Antelope Hunt

I haven't been archery antelope hunting since 1997. I just got back from a 5 day, unguided archery antelope hunt in Northwestern South Dakota with a couple of friends. The bucks weren't really rutting yet and there was too much water for waterhole hunting to be productive. We tried decoying, we tried stalking, we tried hunting from a blind. It turned out that stalking worked best on this hunt. We had a good time, we each had our opportunities and we got 2 bucks. Mine might make Pope & Young.… Continue

thanks i shot that bull a couple years ago in the valle vidal here in new mexico. its a once in a lifetime hunt. i seen around 40 bulls in 10 days. passed on 10 to 15 bulls before i shot that one. first day of the hunt i could of shot a bigger bull, thinking i could find a even bigger bull. my bull scored 310 and my buddy found the bull i was lookin for he scored 360. most of the bulls i seen were 300 class seen a few smaller ones and the one i was talkin about was in the 330 range. awesome hunt, that i would recommend to anyone...

Nice hunt photos John. I always enjoy photos from the hunt other than just the usual trophy shots. I've yet to hunt for pronghorns, but it is on my list.

Love the sky pic at the beginning of your slideshow! I can't ever resist taking pics of sunsets when the sun is shining like that.

Thanks for signing my guest book :-)

John,
Thank you for the comments and the welcome. That hog was taken just out side of Tres Pinos, CA.
You have a great page and after looking at your photos, it looks like your boots are on the ground quite a bit!
